A Meta-analysis of Fibroscan for the staging of liver fibrosis

Abstract

Abstract:

Objective

To evaluate the accuracy of Fibroscan in diagnosis of liver fibrosis stage comparing with liver biopsy(gold standard).

Methods

Chinese and English literatures related Fibroscan diagnosis of liver fibrosis stage between January 2003 and January 2016 published in Pubmed, EMBase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database were evaluated and selected.Stata 14.0 software bivariate mixed effects model was used to conduct data analysis.

Results

Thirty-seven studies which include 9 167 subjects were finally collected by deleting duplicate documents, gradually reading the title, abstract and full text.Among them 4 were Chinese studies, 33 were English studies.The time span was from January 2005 to October 2015.The results showed that the sensitivity(Sen), specificity(Sep), positive likelihood ratio(PPV), negative likelihood ratio(NPV), diagnostic odds ratio(OR)and SROC area under the curve(AUC)for slight(F≥1), obvious(F≥2), severe(F≥3)liver fibrosis and early cirrhosis(F≥4)were 0.76, 0.80, 3.9, 0.30, 13, 0.85 and 0.77, 0.84, 4.7, 0.28, 17, 0.88 and 0.84, 0.87, 6.3, 0.19, 34, 0.92 and 0.89, 0.89, 8.2, 0.12, 67, 0.95.

Conclusion

Fibroscan is highly accurate in staging of liver fibrosis, especially in the diagnosis of severe hepatic fibrosis and early cirrhosis.
