Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the quantitative difference of pancreatic fat fraction(PFF)in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)and normal blood glucose(NBG)by magnetic resonance chemical shift technique, and the correlation between pancreatic fat deposition and T2DM.

Methods

The clinical data and biochemical indexes of fat metabolism of 66 patients with T2DM and 84 patients with NBG who underwent 3.0T MRI examination of the upper abdomen were analyzed retrospectively. The percentages of pancreatic fat content(PFC)in T2DM group and NBG group were measured on both in-phase and opposed-phase sequence images. The difference of PFC was analyzed between T2DM group and NBG group, as well as the correlation with age, gender, body mass index(BMI)and biochemical indexes of fat metabolism.

Results

The average PFF, and focal PFF of pancreatic head, body and tail were 3.7%-10.56%, 2.34%-11.08%, 2.25%-11.33% and 2.34%-13.46% in T2DM group, and 2.4%-7.46%, 1.38%-7.88%, 0.77%-8.59% and 1.38%-9.58% in NBG group. The average PFF(t=4.371, P=0.000), focal PFF of pancreatic head(t=3.231, P=0.002), focal PFF of pancreatic body(t=3.052, P=0.003), focal PFF of pancreatic tail(t=2.962, P=0.004)in T2DM group were significantly higher than those in NBG group. The triglycerides(t=2.614, P=0.010)and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(t=2.271, P=0.025)in T2DM group were higher than those in NBG group. The high density lipoprotein cholesterol(t=-2.560, P=0.011)in T2DM group was lower than that in NBG group.PFC of T2DM group was positively correlated with age(r=0.366, P=0.003)and BMI(r=0.303, P=0.013).

Conclusion

The PFF in T2DM group is significantly higher than that in NBG group, which indicates that the fat deposition of pancreas is closely related to T2DM and may be a potential risk factor for T2DM.
