Abstract:

Objective

To analyze the effect of enteral nutrition support treatment on the lung function and nutritional status of elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at stable stage.

Methods

A total of 112 elderly patients with stable COPD who received treatment in Xinxing County Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Guangdong Province from January 2017 to October 2018 were analyzed retrospectively. Among them, 56 patients received conventional treatment (control group), and 56 patients received enteral nutrition support therapy on the basis of the conventional treatment (study group). Nutrition-related indexes and lung function were compared between the two groups before and 3 months after treatment.

Results

Before treatment, there was no statistical significance in the nutritional indexes and lung function indexes between the two groups (all P>0.05). Three months after treatment, the nutritional indexes such as body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin, serum albumin and total protein level in the study group were significantly better than those in the control group, and the lung function indexes such as forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), FEV1/FVC and FEV1% were also better than those in the control group, with statistically significant differences (all P<0.05).

Conclusion

Enteral nutrition support in the treatment of elderly COPD patients at stable stage can effectively improve the lung function, improve nutritional status, and effectively control the disease, which is worthy of clinical promotion.
