Abstract:

Chronic constipation is a common gastrointestinal disease severely affecting the patient′s quality of life.In recent years, the non-operative treatment of chronic constipation has made great progress.Adjusting the lifestyle and establishing a good defecation habit are essential.Drug therapy is the preferred treatment for chronic constipation, and the laxatives are the most commonly used.Recently, several new drugs including lubiprostone, linaclotide and prucalopride have been approved for treatment of chronic constipation.Guanylate cyclase C agonist Plecanatide and bile acid transporter inhibitor Elobixibat have entered the stage of clinical validation, and the preliminary results show that they can improve the symptoms of constipation.Non-pharmacologic therapies including biofeedback therapy and sacral nerve stimulation(SNS)are effective treatments for improving symptoms as well as quality of life for patients with refractory constipation. In the near future, there will be more effective drugs and non-operative treatments for the treatment of chronic constipation.
