Abstract:

Objective

To detect the expressions of matrix metalloproteinase(MMP-9)and epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR)and their relationships with the prognosis in epithelial malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Methods

Twenty patients with epithelial malignant peritoneal mesothelioma were selected in Cangzhou Central Hospital from January 2011 to December 2012.The peritoneal tissues were obtained by ultrasound guided puncturing and operation, and were diagnosed by pathology and immunohistochemistry. The expressions of MMP-9 and EGFR in peritoneal tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry(S-P method). The relationships of the expressions of the two markers and age, gender, asbestos exposure were analyzed. All patients were followed up to understand the relationship between markers and prognosis.

Results

In 20 patients with epithelial malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, the positive rates of MMP-9 and EGFR were 75% and 85%, respectively.Multivariate analysis showed that the regression coefficients of age and EGFR were 0.126 0 and 0.774 2, and the P values were 0.007 4 and 0.046, respectively. There was no significant relationship between MMP-9 and patients′ survival time(r=-0.396 1, P=0.114).

Conclusion

In this group of patients, age and EGFR are important factors influencing the survival, but the influences of asbestos exposure, sex and MMP-9 are not related to the survival of patients with epithelial malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.
